In 2001, Binvetec was in its infancy, having
recently secured numerous pattern-generating
tile designs by registration with the United States
copyright office at the Library of Congress.
With several hundred designs scribbled on
graph paper, Binvetec's founder, Edward
Borlenghi, yours truly, studied intently the top
few dozen designs by generating excessive
amounts of patterns utilizing a tiling concept
that he had coined FreePattern. This name
was chosen because a great quantity of
unique patterns can be created by simply
changing each tile's rotation. Furthermore,
because a pattern can transform from one
to another when groups of varying patterns
are juxtoposed, the overall configuration is
free to change along the way.
In 2004, Binvetec formed an alliance with
Joy Carpets, Inc. After conducting months
of R&D on the product to ensure it would
have enough appeal ascribed to it in the carpet
marketplace, Joy Carpets, Inc. entered into
licensure for three tile designs
to manufacture.
They go by their original names of Cocoon,
Clockwork and Etruscan.
Due to the fact that the tiling concept called
FreePattern has many different potential uses,
Binvetec began to develop mobile apps in
2011. Tile Spin is a memory game in which
the player must unscramble patterns in as
little time as possible. Tile Spin for Kids is
especially designed to help kids form a
visual memory early in life.
In addition to mobile apps, Tile Spin has
a desktop version, Deluxe, that employs
the FreePattern concept in numerous ways.
From action and strategy games to a hip
screen visualizer, Tile Spin Deluxe is just
as puzzling as the Tile Spin memory game.
